There are so many reasons to fall in love with Ibiza; the beaches, the sunsets, the clubs, the sun that shines over 300 days a year – to name but a few. I fell in love with the little details, the small moments and memories that have made up my life here. Below I’ll share with you some of my memory making spots.
Dalt Vila
The winding, cobbled streets of Ibiza’s Old Town are easy to fall in love with. The apartments and houses stacked on top of each other, the Ibicencans sat on their doorsteps playing guitar or chitter chatting the afternoon away, the sense of not knowing which street is the correct one to get you where you need to go but they all seem to lead in the same direction, it’s such a romantic place, it feels like stepping back in time. Built in the 1500s it’s one of the islands greatest historical attractions. Filled with cafes, cocktail bars and restaurants that spill out onto the cobbled streets, and crowned with Ibiza’s cathedral, I have spent so many days here, wandering the streets, getting lost and falling in love over and over again. There’s truly something magical about this place.
Sa Talaia
Sa Talaia de Sant Josep is the highest point in Ibiza, located in the southwest of the island. It’s an amazing spot to hike up and watch the sunrise, believe me it is well worth the early start! Walking up Sa Talaia has become a bit of a winter tradition between us expats here, it almost signals the start of our ‘quiet season’ and time for those longer, cooler dog walks. We have spent so many mornings and even some afternoons up here with our dog, Scampy. She loves running along side us in the trees, experiencing the true untouched natural beauty of Ibiza.
Sunset(s)
It’s impossible to do a blog about Ibiza without including the famous sunsets. My original favourite spot for a sunset was, of course, Cafe Mambo. Well known for its famous DJs and located on Sunset Strip in San Antonio, this has to be your first stop for a sunset in Ibiza. My first ever one was in 2011, I was holidaying with friends, Fat Boy Slim was playing and it still gives me goosebumps now thinking about it! A year later when I decided to make the move to Ibiza I explored so many more sunset spots; Sunset Ashram, Cala Tarida, Es Vedra to name some but San Antonio will always hold a special place in my heart from that first time.
Es Vedra
It’s impossible to capture the essence of Es Vedra in words alone, it truly is something you have to see for yourself to understand the feeling of it. Es Vedra is one of the most magnetic points on Earth and many people claim that’s why Ibiza has such a magnetism about it. There are quite a few places you can spot this incredible rock from but my two favourite are Cala d’ Hort beach and Torre des Savinar. Cala d’Hort is a perfect spot to spend the afternoon swimming in the crystal clear waters and gazing up at magical Es Vedra. The drive down to Cala d’Hort is breathtaking. Torre des Savinar is a high, cliff edge, abandoned, pirate watch tower. A place we love to explore with our daughter and our dog. You can feel the history there and get to see Es Vedra from above, it’s glorious. If you’re ever thinking of popping the question, sunset over Es Vedra is a good place to start 😉
Time and Space
Time and Space is an art installation between Cala Codolar and Cala Tarida beaches, up on the cliff edges. It’s a breathtaking arrangement of giant basalt rock, organised to be a replica of the solar system with the ‘sun’ topped with gold. Often around sunset you will find people practicing yoga, drummers, people meditating, dog walkers and couples strolling along taking in the views. We spent a couple of years living just a five minute walk from here and would walk along the rocky cliffs with Scampy, taking in the raw natural beauty of the surrounding area. Possibly my second favourite spot to watch the sun go down on another day in Ibiza. There’s a second art installation a mere stones throw away from Time and Space, it’s called The Doors of Es Vedra. Es Vedra, as explained above is one of the most magnetic points on earth. The doors are made of ornately carved wood, and arranged in a way that you can see Es Vedra through them both from the right angle – just divine.
